Each LaserGaugeŽ system consists of a controller and a sensor. The sensor captures the contour of a surface and transmits it to the controller for processing. The controller runs Virtual Gauges or LGBasic algorithms to extract measurements from the digitized contour, displays the plotted contour if the controller has graphical capabilities and saves the measurements to a file.

Sensors come in two basic configurations: handheld for portable applications and remote for stationary or on-line inspection systems. A sensor's field-of-view (FOV) is the width of the laser stripe imaged by the CCD and it defines the sensor's resolution. The feature being measured, such as a weld, fastener or a gap, must be no wider than a third to one-half of the FOV. Some models offer several FOV options; however, the FOV is built into the hardware design and cannot be changed or modified.

The selection of a sensor is based on several factors: type of application, the FOV and resolution required, size limitations or accessibility constraints, and operator preference.

DSP sensor. Self-contained, battery powered.
No controller needed. Can also be used as a USB device connected to a laptop or tablet PC.
FOV: 1.2"(30mm), 1.9"(48mm)
Applications: go/no-go gage, weld inspection, fasteners, gap/flush, step height, large gouges/dents

DSP Sensor with greatest resolution. Self-contained, battery powered. No controller or PC needed to run the sensor. But can be used as a USB device connected to a laptop or tablet PC.
FOV: 0.5" (12mm)
Applications: radius, pitting, corrosion, foreign object damage, step, angle, go/no-go gage.

General purpose, most popular sensor. Pistol grip, finger trigger.
FOV: 0.5"(13mm), 1.2"(30mm), 2.4"(60mm), 3.2"(80mm)
Applications: gap/flush, large radii, step height, large welds, large gouges/dents, fasteners

USB remote sensor for robot or tool-mounted applications. Connects directly to a pc.
FOV: 0.5"(13mm), 1.2"(30mm), 1.9"(50mm), 2.6"(65mm)
Applications: panel fit-up, weld inspection, multiple sensor 360 degree part inspection

Smallest field-of-view and best resolution. Horizontal scanning resolution 0.0005"(15um). Limited to one FOV.
FOV: 0.25"(6mm)
Applications: pitting/corrosion, laser welds, small radius

Ideal for weld and sheet metal/radius measurement applications. Good depth of focus over entire working range, but less range available than HS305.
FOV: 0.75"(20mm), 1.25"(32mm)
Applications: sheet metal radius/flange, weld inspection, small gap/flush

Small sensor with more limited working depth than the HS300, but much smaller size.
FOV: 0.5"(13mm), 1.0"(25mm)
Applications: interior gap/flush, large welds

Innovative Cross Hair design of two perpendicular lasers provides 3D information on surface and edge features. Measures diameter, countersink angle, surface angle, fastener flushness, weld characteristics.
FOV: 0.5" (13mm), 1.0" (25mm), 2.0" (50mm)
Applications: aerospace fasteners, countersinks, spot welds

Designed for remote or tool-mounted applications. Triggered remotely through controller.
FOV: 0.375"(10mm) 0.5"(13mm), 1.0"(25mm), 2.0"(50mm), 3.2" (80mm)
Applications: contour monitoring, weld inspection, remote applications
